"BIG DADDY" TOM ELLIS
BIG DADDY" TOM ELLIS

While at Bardstown, Coach Ellis taught aeronautics, served as principal, and was football and basketball coach. Prior to coming to Bardstown, he became one of Western Kentucky University’s all-time great athletes lettering four years in football, basketball, and baseball.  In addition, he played baseball in the minor leagues.  He began his teaching and coaching career at Bardstown serving the school for 15 years and producing many outstanding teams. Included in his accomplishments is a mythical state football championship in 1941. It was a special team in that it was undefeated, untied, and did not give up a single point all season outscoring its opponents by 285 – 0. At Bardstown, his coaching record was 84 wins, 14 losses, and two ties in football.  His basketball teams had 187 wins and 34 losses.  The TIGER TIMES, January 1941, printed  “ ‘Big Daddy’ lends to Bardstown High the aura of the celebrity, the crown of the consistent winner, and the clean spirit of the fair fighter.”

Coach Ellis left Bardstown to go to Holmes High School in Covington, Kentucky where he assumed the position of athletic director and its head football, basketball, and baseball coach. He retired from education in 1973.  His overall coaching record was 207 wins, 98 losses, and 6 ties in football. In basketball, his record was 608 wins and 184 losses. His baseball teams won approximately 300 games.  He was named coach of the year twice and coached in several all-star games.  In addition, he was elected to the Northern Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame in 1984, the Kentucky High School Sports Hall of Fame in 1988, and the Greater Cincinnati Sports Hall of Fame in 1999. Covington Holmes High School football field is named Tom Ellis Field in his honor.
