As the Board of Education, we welcome you to the Bardstown City Schools and its rich tradition of Excellence, Innovation and Diversity. The Bardstown City School District is recognized as a premier district in the Commonwealth of Kentucky and across the nation as a leader in Year-Round School Education and Coordinated School Health for Students and Staff.
Founded in 1908, our main campus is located on the 300 and 400 blocks of North Fifth Street, not far from the heart of historic Bardstown in Nelson County and the Golden Triangle of Kentucky. Our elementary, middle and high schools are located on the main campus as well as the Board of Education, Transportation, and Student Services. On our second campus, just north of the main campus, are our Early Childhood Education Center and the Bardstown Primary School. Our extended campus includes the Alternative School at Cox's Creek and the Adult Education Program on South Third Street.
The last few years have been a time of rapid growth for Bardstown City Schools as well as a time of great innovation. Bardstown was one of Kentucky's first school systems to adopt a year-round calendar during the 1995-96 school year and system-wide school uniform policy for students in 1998. After fourteen years of using this calendar, alternating nine weeks of classes and two-week breaks in between, the results continue to be positive.
Over the past five years, the district has grown at an annual rate of about five percent. We opened this school year with a record enrollment of over 2,800 students in grades pre-kindergarten through 12. We are home to six (6) school buildings representing five (5) schools including one high school, one middle school, one elementary school, one primary school and one early childhood education center serving almost 400 three and four year-old children daily.
Nationally recognized, Bardstown City Schools has a strong tradition of excellence, experienced a great deal of success through the years and is recognized for our innovations and achievements. Bardstown City Schools is a district that sets high expectations for students and provides a supportive atmosphere that produces student achievement. Our schools are focused on academic rigor, real world relevance, and focused relationships with our parents, students, and community.
As a district, we set the academic bar high and focus our energy on literacy and numeracy skills which are fundamental building blocks to success in all academic achievements and in career success. Our programming is guided by the following core beliefs: our children can learn to high expectations, education improves the quality of life, learning is a lifelong process, collaboration and communication are critical to making progress, and accountability is a critical component of achievement. We are confident that, working together with all facets of the community, we will see our students and schools attain even greater heights in the years ahead.
We, at Bardstown City Schools, invite you to visit our schools and experience the spectrum of educational opportunities available for our students. We are proud of our accomplishments and look forward to even greater academic accomplishments as we continue to enthusiastically prepare our students for the 21st century.
