My name is Jillian West. I am a reading teacher at Bardstown Middle School in the sixth grade. I am originally from Shelby, Ohio, and I graduated from The Ohio State University.  I moved to Bardstown 20 years ago and became a Bardstown Tiger.  It is my pride and joy!  Sixth grade is the BEST and you will enjoy learning and growing with this great team of teachers.  With that being said... teaching is my passion, our children are our future, and I love every minute of it!
And as always...
Go Buckeyes!  :0)

What are we doing during reading time at school?

Most reading assignments will be completed during class time. Your child’s agenda will be completed daily informing you of every assignment done during this time.  Homework is only completed at home if your child does not complete it during class time. The worksheets are contained in your child's binder most of the time, so you may check over his/her work to see what is going on in the class.  During the school year, we are looking at many different genres of literature inside and out of our literature book.  In case you haven't heard yet, I do a check on Friday's to see if the agenda is being completed by your child. I have found over the years that this will help us to stay on the same page throughout the school year and prepare for any upcoming quiz, test, or project that may be due.

During class time we also incorporate a reading program called Reading Plus.  This program is individually designed for your child.  It is amazing!  Its focus is fluency and comprehension at 80% or better.  A 30% grade will be achieved weekly by your child.  One class period per week is designed to facilitae two articles of your child's choice for assessment.  The object is to complete these articles at 80% or better.  If this does not occur, your child will have the opportunity to complete more articles at home during the week (if needed) to reach that goal.  This program reaches every student at his/her level and pushes them to their highest potential.

What am I supposed to be doing at home for reading?

Each student is required to read a chapter book/novel (on or above his/her personal reading level). This is a homework assignment in which 15 minutes of reading time must be completed at home per night.  Progression in the novel is so very important so that your child does not fall behind.  After completion of the novel, a book project will be due at the end of EVERY quarter.  I will send a rubric explaining each project by the third week so that every parent is aware of the expectations.

Email is the best way to reach me if you have any questions.  I will reply within 24 hours via email or phone ( your choice).

This is going to be a great year!
