Student discuss nursing with local human resource manager
The Bardstown Nelson Chamber of Commerce partnered with Bardstown City Schools, Nelson County Schools and Bethlehem High School for the first-ever Community Connect, a reverse job fair, on Wednesday, May 2.

The Community Connect is a spin on the traditional job fair. Instead of companies waiting for job-seekers to visit their booths, work-ready students set up to showcase their skills and attract employers.

As part of the Community Connect, students taking career and technical education (CTE) courses at the Nelson County Area Technology Center set up industry specific booths to showcase their talents and skills. More importantly, the event allowed students to develop their soft skills in an authentic setting.

“I had a meeting with Armag and because of the welding skills I am learning at the ATC I was offered a full-time welding job this summer,” said Naquan Wright, a junior at Bardstown High School.

Welding was just one of the many industry specific booths set up at the Community Connect. Additionally, Bardstown students hosted booths that included business, consumer and family management, early childhood education, engineering, automotive, electrical, health sciences, information technology, construction/carpentry, computer aided design, and welding. These are all trades that under the Bardstown City Schools’ career and technical offerings and through a partnership with the local area technology center.

More than 60 Bardstown students engaged with over 70 business and industry representatives and human resource directors.

Several other students left Community Connect with potential job offerings and many more left with a foot in the door for a future career.
