BCS has much to celebrate with recently released assessment scores
BCS has much to celebrate with recently released assessment scores

Tim Beck and Michelle Spalding, district directors of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment told school board members at their October monthly meeting that although the state assessment scoring system has changed, Bardstown City Schools has much to celebrate.

Brent Holsclaw, superintendent, agreed. “We definitely set the bar high last year by achieving ‘Distinguished District’ status, but we knocked it out of the park again,” he said.

While the new accountability system doesn’t give a single score or label, Bardstown City Schools scored high enough that it could have been named a District of Distinction this year if the same system was in place. This was the highest honor under the previous system.

There are five major components to the Accountability System and 20 Content Indicators within those major components. Beck told the board members, “Of those 20 indicators, we increased our scores in 17 of those indicators and scored the highest we have ever achieved in 14 of the indicators.”

One area where we saw tremendous gains is in high school writing scores. Now, well above the state average, these scores are a testament to strategies that have been put in place through targeted interventions and focus on individual students.

“We are sharing these strategies throughout our school system to help us improve in other areas,” explained Spalding.

Bardstown High School also scored above the state average in College and Career Readiness (CCR) while achieving its highest CCR score ever. This is a great indication that we are preparing students for their next step after graduation. In addition, the Graduation Rate at BHS increased over previous years and ranked well above the state average.

Another area of which we are particularly proud is our ACT scores at the high school. ACT is a college entrance exam taken by ALL high school juniors, which measures the subjects of English, math, reading and science. In all subjects except math, BHS juniors scored above the state average, including the composite score.

Great job students, teachers and staff!
