All funds raised from the Turkey Bowl go to support the BackPack Program of Nelson County, which provides food and snacks for children who may otherwise be hungry through the weekend.
Additional information about the need in Nelson County:
Two thousand ninety children. According to Feeding America, Kentucky’s Heartland, Map the Meal Gap data, 18.6 percent, or 2,090, of Nelson County children are estimated to suffer from food insecurity. It is also estimated that 23 percent of those children come from families whose income makes them ineligible for federal supplemental food assistance. Why so many hungry children? One major reason is an increase in housing costs that have created a burden on families. Decisions must be made: Rent or food, heat or eat, lights or lunch? How difficult it must be for a parent to be faced with such decisions.
How does hunger affect school performance and behavior? Students may exhibit excessive absences, a short attention span, complaints of not feeling well, an inability to concentrate, behavior problems, poor academic status, and/or regularly asking for extra food and rushing food lines.
Feeding America, Kentucky Heartland’s Nelson County BackPack Program provides a bag of 13-16 food kid-friendly, nutritious food items each week during the school year to children in need. It costs $120 to provide services for one student for the school year. Generous donations from the Tri-County United Way, individuals, civic/school/church groups, and local businesses/industry have ensured to date that no student is put on a waiting list.
