About Mrs. Kellem

Hello! Welcome to BPS STEM! My name is Amy Kellem. I have three children - ages 23, 17, and 8. My husband Bryan is a Spanish teacher at Bardstown High School. I have been a part of Bardstown City Schools family since 2001. I worked at the Early Childhood Center from 2001 to 2003 as the Parent Coordinator. I have been a classroom teacher since 2004. At Bardstown Elementary, I taught fourth grade for two years and third grade from 2006-2015. From 2015 to 2017, I served as the Math Intervention Teacher at BPS. I taught first grade from 2017 to 2019.

I have a B.A. in Speech Communication from Indiana University Southeast. I completed my teacher certification program in 2004 and was recertified through the Kentucky Department of Education's Continuing Education Option in March 2014.

Math Intervention at BPS
In August 2015, I became the district's first Math Intervention Teacher at Bardstown Primary School. I became a Math Intervention Specialist in 2016. My position was partially funded by a Math Achievement Fund grant through the Kentucky Center for Mathematics. I loved supporting BPS students and teachers in their math journeys.

Teaching math is my passion. I have been working to improve and enhance my math instructional practices since 2010. I enjoy attending math conferences and professional development courses each year to stay up-to-date on best teaching practices in math.

I completed Math Recovery training in Add+Vantage Math Recovery, as well as Student Numeracy Assessment Progressions (SNAP) assessments. I completed Math Recovery Intervention Specialist certification in June 2016. These assessments and trainings allow me to screen and diagnose a child's current location on their math learning journey. As an interventionist, I used this information to help the classroom teacher to support the student, as well as to determine if the student would benefit from small group or one-on-one instruction outside of the classroom.

In 2017, funding was no longer available to continue the Math Intervention program. I returned to the classroom in the 2017-18 school year in my new role as a first grade teacher. In 2019, I resumed my role as a math interventionist at Bardstown Primary School on a part-time basis. You can find math resources for your child by joining Bardstown Primary School Math Intervention on Facebook.

In the summer of 2020, I was chosen to serve as a Kentucky Math Teacher Leader through the Kentucky Center for Mathematics. I am proud to be a part of this initiative tworking with eachers from all across Kentucky. I am also working on my Naitonal Board Teacher Certification during the 2020-21 school year.
In addition to teaching, I also founded and consult for the Math Intervention Matters group for teachers on Facebook. This group serves as a teaching resource and support page for math teachers all over the world. The group currently has over 17,000 members.
