Ms Burks
Jennifer Burks 8th Grade ELA/Reading
My name is Jennifer Burks and I will be entering my 13th year of teaching, my seventh year, at Bardstown Middle School.  I moved to Bardstown in 2013 and I have totally fallen in love with the city and this school.  I have taught freshman level English, English Honors and freshman level Social Studies, in addition to eighth grade reading and writing.  I am very passionate about building relationships with students, promoting leadership and citizenship among young adults and I create lessons that allow children to take ownership in their education.
Each year at Bardstown has been unique and exciting and I have the same expectations for this year. I enjoy engaging students in various rigorous activities that push them to take ownership in their learning.  Much of what we do is student led, collaborative work that requires participation from your student!
In reading, we begin the year with units centered on real life stories; content in reading and writing will be very commonly related. This unit gives students an opportunity to learn about historical events and figures and allows them to voice their own beliefs about important issues, people and places.  We will go on to read Night, To Kill a Mockingbird and numerous short stories, dramas and non-fiction articles.
In writing, we will begin with basic grammar--the eight parts of speech and our main point of focus will narrative writing and basic reading skills, such as annotation.  Throughout our narrative unit, students will read narrative essays, evaluate literary elements and they will engage in writing their own stories; these stories will be about actual events from their lives.
Following the narrative unit, students will begin the largest portion of our content, argumentative writing.  Students will write numerous thesis statements and engage in thought provoking discussions on multiple issues. Students will work on several argumentative topics and will write multiple argumentative essays.
Other units throughout the course of the year include:
Writing--Argumentative writing, informational writing, speeches, poetry, argumentative writing follow-up
Reading--We will read the novels To Kill a Mockingbird and Night. We will also read several fictional short stories, poems, speeches, informational readings and engage in assessment practice.
If you have any questions regarding the class, please feel free to contact me via email.
The absolute best way for you to stay in tune with the work we are doing in class is to access Google Classroom through your child's account.  I list all daily agendas, link, study materials, assignments, etc...and it will answer many questions that you may have about the work that is being done in class.
